The Boy in the Striped Pajamas: Book and Film :: The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, John Boyne

The book The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, by John Boyne is about a little youngster, Bruno, whose father is a trooper in the German armed force during WWII. Bruno lives with his folks and his more established sister, Gretel. They live in a five story house in Berlin. He goes to class and has three closest companions that he goes on undertakings with. One day he gets back home to discover their servant pressing his things. They move to a three story house in Germany since his father was elevated and should be nearer to his work. Bruno is getting truly irritated that he can no longer observe his companions or his grandparents. He is stuck in his home and can’t investigate as much as he might want in light of the fact that there is nobody to investigate with. He sees something out his window one day, an enormous fenced in territory with negligible spots moving. He asks his sister and house keeper Maria what they are nevertheless they don’t know. He chooses one day that he will investigate the fenced in region, so he leaves when nobody is looking and investigates it for around two hours strolling all over the fence searching for something. At last he runs over I kid about a similar size of him so he goes up and converses with him. The boy’s name is Shmuel and they are a similar age. One day when Shmuel gets sent to sparkle glasses at his home him and Bruno begin talking. A fighter see them and Bruno revealed to him he didn’t know what his identity was, and the warrior beats the kid, Bruno feels awful and need to make it up to Shmuel. Bruno needs to comprehend why the life behind the fence is so dreadful and why Shmuel isn’t glad. Bruno thinks it’s worse, yet intriguing in light of the fact that there are different children to play with. They structure a solid bond that can't be broken by anything and it causes him to understand that his companions in Berlin weren't as exceptional as Shmuel is and their kinship. Joan Of Arc By Jules Bastien Le Page Argumentative Essay ?Joan of Arc,? was painted by the French realist artist Jules Bastien-Lepage in 1879. ?After the province of Lorraine was lost to Germany following the Franco-Prussian War in 1821, The Frenchmen saw in Joan of Arc a new and powerful symbol. In 1875, Bastien-Lepage, a native of Lorraine began to make studies for a picture of her. In the present painting, exhibited in the Salon of 1880, Joan is shown receiving her revelation in her parents garden. Behind her are Saints Michael, Margaret, and Catherine. (Caption next to painting in The Metropolitan)? Jules Bastien-Lepage creates a realistic atmosphere, including a supernatural, religious-like presence within his painting. Oil on canvas was used to create the realistic quality of the work. By closely examining the artists technique, it is clear that he uses delicate brush strokes in a true to life manner. The colors, and use of light seem to be painted in a layered fashion to give the landscape a sense of depth. The background of the pai nting is a garden which include foliage and brush that surrounds the primary focus of the painting, Joan of Arc. The artist put a great effort into the details of the scene. Bastien-Lepage uses a distinct realistic quality in his painting which is visible in each individual leaf and branch. Various hues of earth tones, green and brown being the most evident, are blended together in the garden scene. In the foreground of the painting is Joan of Arc. She is painted with a seemingly thicker paint technique. This makes her a more easily visible aspect in the painting, and catches the onlookers eye. Joan is dressed in a long brown skirt and blue-gray shirt with white underneath which is the typical clothing style of the 19th century. The clothing is painted to show its wear and tear. Her features and her figure are quite realistic. She seems to have a calm, but troubled expression on her face, as though she is deep in thought. Overall she is painted in a very detailed manner. A less visi ble, yet still present and important aspect of the painting are the three figures positioned behind Joan, and in front of the house. The figures are somewhat transparent, and ghostly. Their presence adds a spiritual and or religious feeling to the scene. These three figures presence blends into the scenery. Al three have halos above their heads, and serene looks on their faces. The saint on the right is dressed in what looks to be armor. He looks brave, and as if he is standing guard or going into battle. The middle saint is a praying angel. She is in a dress with a gauzy, white presence around her. This whiteness gives her an ethereal quality which Bastien-Lepage has painted quite effectively, and adds to the spiritual feeling of the scene. Her presence in the painting seems to represent chastity and virtue. The last figure looks like a young girl or child, who is kneeling with her face hidden in her hands almost as if she is upset. Perhaps Bastien-Lepage painted these three saints not only to illustrate Joan receiving her visions, but to illustrate the bravery, religious yet childlike figure that she was. Behind Joan of Arc, in the background of the picture is a house. Bastien-Lepage painted the house so that the masonry is visible. The house seems to be small in size, plain, and quaint. Surrounding the house is shrubbery, trees, and more of the garden wh ich is seen throughout the painting. This painting of Joan of Arc is very significant. Bastien-Lepage is able to effectively depict Joan as the true heroine that she was. This is significant because at the time there were not so many women heroines like her. Jaelen Venable March 7, 2017 English 111 College Football Coach vs. University President If the average American had to choose between being the head football coach of a major FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) football program like Alabama or Ohio State or be the school's chancellor/president its safe to say the majority would choose to be a college football coach. After all Americans love their college football. Nowadays collegiate coaches make millions every year to coach football. Valerie Strauss of the Washington Post says "University presidents average a total salary of about $400,000 a year" (Washington Post). Alabama's Nick Saban makes seven million a year, so one can put that into comparison. Is this fair? I think it is because college coaches generate a great amount of money for the school, and have successful football programs, and have endorsements that help the university. College football coaches help generate a great amount of money for a university whether it be through television revenue or sports apparel. Television revenue is the biggest money producer for college coaches. When games are played on TV the university is allowed to advertise themselves to attract people to attend. There is also competition between networks and whichever creates the most revenue is what will be aired. College coaches are like a brand for the university they represent. The major programs that have successful athletic programs provide coaches with most of the money because if a coach is winning a school will pay top dollar to keep him there. A general rule of thumb a most universities is that a school cannot pay an employee is more than the president so this is why college coaches receive their money from other places and not the university. The president does not generate any money for the school, they simply oversee everything and make regulations. University of Alab ama president Judy Bonner said in a statement that Saban's salary "Is paid completely out of the athletic department's budget, which is self-supporting. The athletics department provides $5 million annually to help support faculty programs and academic scholarships" (News Today). Whenever a teenager is deciding what college they want to attend the football program will play a part in that decision. Students want to be apart of the football atmosphere and participate in games. A successful football program can create that atmosphere. A coach's success on the field adds to their pay. Consistently winning gets a coach extra incentives. Jim Baumbach's research states that "The incentive for winning the Southeastern Conference is $125,000 and $50,000 for being coach of the year" (News Today). Doing those two things alone is a little under half the salary of a university president. The athletic department sets goals for coaches like getting a certain number of wins, winning the conference, etc. There are also off the field goals for coaches as well, so they want to succeed in that also. For instance, if a coach's team averages a certain grade point average he can receive incentives for that, as well as how many players that graduate while he is head coach. Incentiv es can also be earned for things like sellout crowds. Endorsements play a big part in a college coach's salary. Alabama's Nick Saban has endorsements from Ford and Coca Cola. Those two companies alone can support him for the rest of his life because of how productive they are. Endorsements also promote the university. If someone see's Nick Saban drinking Coke or in a Coke commercial they will feel the need to research the University of Alabama. Fans will also drink Coke over a competitor like Pepsi just because Nick Saban is endorsed by Coke. Saban's corporation, Sideline Inc., "receives income related to fees, royalty payments, advance payments or similar compensation" (New York Times). Also players do not get paid and cannot receive benefits, so these companies and brands reach out to coaches instead. School presidents are not endorsed by anyone; their salary comes strictly from the university. College coaches being paid more than school president may not seem right, but its fair considering all the money generated by the athletic department of major football programs. Trinity and Cypher Essays Trinity and Cypher Paper Trinity and Cypher Paper Movies are wonderful things; they can inspire, spark debate, and even make you believe in what you are seeing. Virtual Reality is a creation of a highly interactive computer-based multimedia environment in which the user becomes a participant with the computer in a virtually real world. This is what the Matrix really is. In the opening scenes we are introduced to only a few of The Matrixs main characters. Firstly, we overhear 2 mysterious, secretive voices, male and female. Morpheus believes he is the one. Do you? It doesnt matter what I think. We do not know who they are at this point however, later it becomes clear that it was Trinity and Cypher on the phone, and that the phone was being tapped by the agents, who learn of Trinitys whereabouts and seek her out. The first character we visually see is Trinity, sitting at a computer, wearing a tight black latex cat suit, little does she know that there are policemen gathering outside the door to her hotel room. The police kick the door down and Trinity doesnt move. As one policeman advances to arrest Trinity, the action begins and we see Trinity as highly trained in the martial arts. She knocks the policemen to the floor, either dead or unconscious and the scene ends. We now think of trinity as some kind of Fugitive. There are some special effects in this scene, which I shall look at later. Trinity means a group of three. The character is part of the Neo-Trinity-Morpheus group, and also part of the Neo-Trinity-Cypher love triangle. The name could also refer to the Christian Trinity (the Father, Son and Holy Spirit). You can tell that the Agents are the baddies instantly. They seem robotic, and powerful and very stereotypical, they wear black suits and dark sunglasses. Do they have something to hide? They walk and do things in unison with each other, this perhaps shows that they are robots and are controlled as a unit? Agent Smith is obviously the leader, as he gives out the commands; the other two agents that we see him with in the first scenes obey without question. All the agents wear earpieces and receive messages through these. Are they being told what to do by someone else? Or are they being told what to do by the Matrix? Agent Smith the name of the main Agent in the movie. Like Anderson, this is a generic sounding name, representing conformity, and the faceless nature of the Agents. Morpheus asks the agent who he is. The agent replies Agent Smith. Morpheus responds with You all look the same to me. Cypher is the unknown voice on the other end of the phone to Trinity right at the beginning of the Matrix. We dont know anything about Cypher until later on apart from the fact that he talks about killing someone and that he works with Trinity. We do not know his name until later on in the film, however the phone call conversation gets the viewers wondering what the film is about. One meaning for the word Cypher is zero. This is funny, because if Neo is the one (1), then that makes Cypher the zero (0). Together, Cypher and Neo are 0 and 1, the two digits in the binary number system used by computers. The two of them are opposing values in the movie, because they are working towards opposite ends. This number reference continues with Trinity as the 3. Therefore there also ought to be a character who is symbolically the 2, but who is it? Maybe it is Thomas Anderson, Neos name inside the Matrix. Thomas means twin. The whole movie is all about dual existence, in reality and in the Matrix. Another meaning of Cypher is a cryptographic system in which symbols are transposed or substituted. Symbolically, this name shows that Cypher is concealing something. Morpheus is first heard on the phone to Trinitys mobile. He sounds powerful and in control, he speaks calmly and slowly. He reassures Trinity and tells her to get out to the phone box outside, in which she can get out of the Matrix. The Matrix uses colour themes, where a single colour dominates many scenes in the movie. Some other movies Ive seen that use this visual technique are The Cook, the Thief, His Wife Her Lover, and Temptation of a Monk, to name just two. The three main colours (other than black) in the movie, in order of how often they occur are Green, Blue, and Red. The whole of the first scene is very dark, because it is set at night. The lighting gives a very tense, dangerous feeling and leaves the viewers on the edge of their seats. Spotlights are used a lot in the first scene, whilst following the policemen; the only lighting given off is from their torches. The viewers can only see what the policemen can see; therefore it makes them feel part of the action. In the real world, there is usually a blue tint on everything, whereas in the matrix, they use green tints. The green colour theme starts at the very beginning of the movie, and it is the most often used theme. The green-on-black theme may be a reference to old monochrome computer monitors, which often displayed green on a black background. The green inside the Matrix symbolises computers and artificial intelligence. It makes everything look quite creepy and unreal. The opening scene, which is very dark creates a sense of foreboding and uneasiness. I think you can say that RED would be the colour that represents sacrifice for freedom. (RED usually indicates blood, which is usually a requirement for freedom) Red pill = freedom Red woman = by longing for the woman in red Neo risks his freedom in taking a second look and almost getting shot by an Agent Red blood = end of the movie, when he bleeds and becomes freed from his mind and becomes The One Red pod = when he wakes up and sees the red stuff around him, he becomes freed from the enslavement of the Matrix. Sound is a major issue in The Matrix. There are many sounds in the first scene that set the mood of the film. Computer bleeps, keyboard tapping etc. Many of the sounds we hear are voices. The voices of Trinity and Cypher on the phone, and Morpheus cool and reassuring voice, when he talks to trinity on her mobile. There are also a whole range of sound effects and music. These are what I shall concentrate on. There are a lot of diegetic sounds in the first scenes of The Matrix. Gunshots, the sound of feet running, footsteps, the Agents car pulling up to the hotel etc. All of these sounds add to the realistic atmosphere of the film.

The Pollutant Source and Pathway The source of the Fukushima nuclear plant disaster is directly related to the earthquake of a 9.0 magnitude that hit Japan in 2011. This earthquake caused damage to the external power supply and the backup diesel emergency generators were flooded leading them to fail. After the failure of the diesel backup generators, the reactor operators initiated the emergency battery power but they run out after 8 hours of operation. The enduring heat therefore, could not be carried out and this led to fuel failure. Fuel failure occurs because of mechanical, chemical or even thermal failures when there is too much heat in the valves (Brook, 2011). The nuclear power plant workers had now to focus on managing the core while the heat was building up to allow the fuel cladding to keep going as much as possible. In reality, the reactor is made up of several independent and different cooling systems that operate to ensure smooth flow. These cooling systems include the reactor water clean-up mechanism, the decay heat exclusion, the core isolating cooling system, and also standby cooling mechanism among others. It is evident some of these cooling system failed and caused damage to the core and therefore, the disaster occurred (Elliott 2012, p.7). When the workers lost most of the cooling systems because of loss of power, they had to come up with other means of eliminating the heat. Atmospheric Ozone - Essay Example Although Ozone occurs naturally in the atmosphere it can be produced by numerous chemical reactions in a chemical laboratory. Atmospheric Ozone results from a mechanism when O2 absorbs Ultra Violet (UV) radiation at wavelengths of about 242 nanometers (nm) [1m = 109nm] but is removed by a phenomenon called Photo-dissociation from sunlight at wavelengths greater than 290nm (Ozone in the Atmosphere "n.d"). The troposphere which is the bottom layer of atmosphere has the lowest amount of ozone. The deterioration of the Ozone layer leads to a phenomenon known as the 'Greenhouse' effect. The effect is caused by greenhouse gasses known as chlorofluorocarbons (CFC's) including carbon dioxide and is a major cause of many environmental problems. Greenhouse gases are said to be the leading cause of Global warming (Ozone in the Atmosphere, "n.d"). The amount of ozone in the atmosphere is measured using Dobson units (Du), [1 mm of O3 thick layer = 100 Du] if compressed at sea level pressure. The threat to the atmospheric ozone balance has been on the increase as industrialization and modernization grows around the world. These events have significantly increased the rate of ozone removal, resulting in a gradual decline in the global ozone levels (Wikipedia, "n.d"). Ozone Depletion Man-made industrial activities produce massive amounts of CFC's. The dangerous and ozone depleting compounds are used in many industrial processes and can be found in many household products. CFC's are used as coolants in refrigerators and as propellants in various spray cans. These gases are also employed in the production of certain foam mixtures, in electronic and mostly in solvents (The Atmospheric Zone "n.d"). CFC's have a very long lifespan. A single molecule of a CFC gas can exist for centuries before it is eliminated once it escapes into the atmosphere. After their release into the air through a simple human activity like the spraying of a CFC containing can, studies have shown that the gases can reach the stratosphere between a 1-5 year periods. Once the released CFC reaches the ozone layer, it depletes it causing less UV rays to be absorbed by ozone layer. This happens when the CFC molecules breakdown upon reaction with UV rays from sunlight, the reaction releases free radical chlorine atoms and it these atoms that destroy and deplete atmospheric ozone layer. The depletion of the protective ozone layer and the subsequent passage of UV rays which are known to be harmful are the cause of various effects and illnesses. Nato in Afghanistan Essay NATO’s (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) continued presence in Afghanistan will continue to foster the development of democratization, human rights and development, while effectively eliminating the Taliban from the region. The rise of the Taliban occured when the Soviets invaded Afghanistan in 1979, during the Cold War. The Soviets came into Afghanistan looking to expand their Communist empire. As a result of this Communist expansion in Afghanistan, the USA decided to take counter action against the Soviets, their Cold War enemy, by funding an opposition party. This opposition, called the Mujahedeen, was a religious group with the objective to fight off the change in their cultural country. When the Mujahedeen (now known as the Taliban) drove the Soviets out of Afghanistan, there was the opportunity for a group to take power in the country since the former government had been brought down. As the Taliban had the money and power, they took the opportunity to take control in the country. The Soviet Invasion had made such horrific living conditions to live in, that Afghanistan was known to be the top migrating country at the time. There were 5-10 million Afghans that fled to Iran and Pakistan to seek refuge, with an outstanding 670,000 to 2 million killed. The largest city Kabul, went from a mid-large population of 200,000 people to less than 25,000 people- followed by a month-long campaign of carpet combing and bulldozing by the Soviets and Afghan communist soldiers in 1987. The horror did not just end after the Soviets fled. Today there are an estimated 10-15 million landmines left scattered across the country side, some of which are still active today. It is estimated to take 4,300 years to remove all the land mines that were placed during the Soviet Invasion in Afghanistan, leaving the country as a current dangerous battle zone. When the Soviets left Afghanistan in 1989, Afghanistan was in a very bad position. All that was left was an almost empty government system, an armed terrorist group with high power, and a lack of resource development. During the Taliban rule (from 1989), young Afghan women were shot for attending school, assaulted for not wearing a burqa, and spat on by the ruling class. Although the USA had funded the Taliban during the Soviet Invasion, the outbreak by the Taliban has resulted in NATO choosing to step forward to spread fair a democracy in a needing nation. The current mission that NATO has in Afghanistan is a guide and structure build for developing a strong secular government system- rather than what some Afghan Taliban may refer to it as, â€Å"a destruction of Afghan sovereignty. † The Taliban, or as they call themselves, â€Å"The Warriors and Protectors of Islam,† want to keep Afghanistan as a traditional and pure country with no outside influences such as NATO. Harsh punishments from the Taliban are more often set on Afghan citizens to create bigger scare and public awareness, showing they have no tolerance for broken set rules (their rules that they bring into extremity from the Quran). Having a westernized organization like NATO in Afghanistan upsets the Taliban and Al Qaeda. Although Al Qaeda and the Taliban are different groups, this is an occasion where Al Qaeda and the Taliban agreed to fight together. The Taliban originally did not accept the Arabian group Al Qaeda to set up a base in Afghanistan, but these two different groups both had a common agreement on the abolishment of westernized influences. During this war against the USA, former leader of Al Qaeda, Osama Bin Laden, allied with the Taliban for a Jihad, which according to author Gohari, means, â€Å"A holy war against the Americans who are occupying the land of the two shrines,† and states that a US war on his country, Saudi Arabia, would soon cause an alliance of Muslims to be a US war on Muslims all over the globe. Now, the war has parted into two sides: the USA as part of NATO, versus the Taliban and Al Qaeda. Now one may be wondering what exactly drives the Taliban to act as they do, and the reason is their perspective on religion (Islam). They control governance very similar to a right wing, fascist party. There is a huge reliance on using the religion of Islam to maintain control of society, frequently taken to the extremity, and often at the expense and contradiction of Islamic thought, theory and belief. The Taliban were the elites of Afghanistan before NATO came in and controlled governance, punishing those who choose to disobey their rules and ideologies. The Afghans lived under the Taliban rule in Afghanistan long before the Soviets even fled. It is important to note that the Taliban is an embodiment of a male Afghan mindset, a force that has extreme traditional and religious views. Thus, all individuals with these extreme views are essentially having the same viewpoints of the Taliban. To author Fereshta, â€Å"The Taliban rule is the reason my grandmother cannot read. She explains that the reason behind her grandmother’s illiteracy was the extreme traditional mindset from men several years ago, that affected the treatment of women. During the ruling, as a force, the Taliban were able to strip women of even their basic rights, beyond just their education. Some examples of rules the Taliban have in place (the Taliban still control some sections of Afghanistan) include; pun ishments for: women walking in the street without a blood relative, women speaking loudly in public allowing strangers to hear their voice, and even the presence of a woman in the media. Men as well have been punished. It was almost essential to be purely part of the Islamic faith or they would face consequences. The Taliban has harsh rules set on women in particular, reasoning some support this NATO mission to take out this strongly fascist-like force. This is why NATO’s mission in Afghanistan is to create a secular government- where religion does not in any way affect the laws and rules of its citizens, and in the process destroying Al Qaeda and the Taliban. Evidently, it is vital for NATO to stay in Afghanistan. Without NATO’s involvement, the Taliban would re-establish their power within the first 24 hours of NATO’s leave. It is important to understand that it isn’t the strength of the twenty thousand Taliban in Afghanistan that is the problem, but it is the extremely weak ninety thousand Afghanistan military set to effectively fight terrorism off. In order to permanently stop the Taliban ruling in Afghanistan, the members of NATO need to put in effective effort into the mission, rather than planning to pull out an simply fund money. It is much more beneficial for the country of Afghanistan to have a strong NATO leader with them to assist and fully physically train its military, rather than NATO partially assisting and only providing temporary services. The foreign policies for members of NATO should not be to withdraw troops and make plans to leave by 2014, but to be efficient by deploying experienced troops and commanders, allowing the Afghan military to be better trained. The Afghanistan military knows that NATO is there to train them, and if NATO decides  to start taking away troops, then all efforts already placed to the Afghan military will go to waste as Afghan military cannot yet sustain itself. Members of NATO must be active in Afghanistan and remain dedicated in order to fully build the developed future of Afghanistan. It is also suggested that NATO controls Afghan cities and roads connecting them, to reduce the number of coalition troops who are killed by road side bombs, making the mission more efficient. NATO also needs to work on the control of the opium exports from Afghanistan. About 60% of the world’s illegal opium imports come from Afghanistan, allowing the Taliban to tax local farmers on these exports, resulting in illegally attained money from the black market. With NATO’s mission in place, a structure of democracy is slowly being built. They are interning the economic structure of Afghanistan by the creation of a free market, a boost in the economy, a structure of authority, and a major incline in social qualities (freedom of press and religion). The International Security Assistance force (ISAF) is also a force working in Afghanistan which along with NATO has passed several stages of the mission. In fact, NATO has taken the Taliban out of power, significantly helped the country with its increase in national security, education and healthcare, and has also assisted with the increase in media and free press, rising to seventy five TV stations and one million internet users. By allowing the people of Afghanistan to have a democratic voice and opinion, they can prevent a small group such as the Taliban from ruling the streets again. NATO’s disrespectful behaviour has also been another issue in Afghanistan. Many of the Afghan people are not pleased with NATO’s conducts. It is argued by some that NATO’s conduct hogs land, blocks roads, allows them to mistreat prisoners, and causes the deaths of innocent civilians. However, dealing with civilians is not easy for NATO. Distinguishing who is an ally, and who is in an enemy is not easy when fighting an intelligent group like the Taliban, who employ guerrilla warfare. This results in blame towards NATO for having detrimental behavior, and mistreating innocent civilians thought to be in disguise. However, NATO’s justification is that there have been 50+ cases of troops being killed by who appeared to be their own colleagues disguised in Afghan Army clothing, but were actually secret Taliban members. NATO states that  there have been several casualties during this mission, a lot of which NATO blames civilians for not following conduct rules and disobeying them for their safety. However, Afghan people still do have a valid reason to disrespect NATO soldiers. It would upset any Afghan knowing troops have been taking pictures of themselves posing beside dead Taliban fighters, and hearing reports that talk about soldiers urinating on dead corpses. If NATO wants to successfully complete its mission, then they need its members and soldiers to fully commit to the cause without disorderly conduct. It is important for NATO members to stay in Afghanistan right now in order to fully complete their mission, rather than pulling out in 2014. Afghanistan is now governed by a democratic government, which still needs more development in national security in order to sustain itself. Having NATO stay a few years more will insure the Afghanistan military and government can maintain their position, resulting in a socially and economically developing country. It is not just western influences that NATO is trying to place in Afghanistan. NATO is there taking out the Mujahedeen to create a stable economy, a democratic government system and an end to the ‘Religious Fascism’ currently controlling Afghanistan. In our modern day society, for a country to be stable, they must develop those three factors; a stable economy, a secure democratic government system, and a society where citizens can make their own choices. Who Tamed Fire First? Essay -- Exploratory Essays Research Papers

Who Tamed Fire First? The farther back in time we explore, the more room there seems to be for discrepancy among various theories regarding the history of the earth. One of the many disputed aspects of history concerns the nature of the relationship between humans and the environment. This paper will focus on the debate of the origin of first tamed fire. Was it Homo erectus or Homo sapiens? The widely accepted big bang theory of evolution "paints Homo erectus as no more than a smart ape," (McCrone, New Scientist, May 20, 2000, 31) with a, "15-minute culture," (McCrone, 34) incapable of manipulating his surrounding environment. Though even if we were to believe he was physically capable of accomplishing this act, McCrone explains, "controlling fire simply seemed too intellectually sophisticated a feat for this creature," who were, "primitive toolmakers, and showed no signs of symbolic thinking over the next million or more years of their existence," (McCrone, 31). Under this theory, any remains of fires from his time are written off as bush fires, lightning strikes, and other such naturally induced occurrences. It is not until Homo sapiens comes along that humans are considered to have begun to "master" their environment. A recent, more scientifically based analysis of ancient Chinese fires supports this same stance that Homo erectus was not the first to tame fire. The geological analysis took place at the Zhoukoudian site in China, where an opposing theory marks the first controlled fire at 500,000 years ago by Homo erectus' hands, (Wuethrich, Science Magazine, July 10, 1998). Though they confirmed recovering burnt bones from the site, there was no solid evidence to suggest the controlled use of fire, such as hearths,... ...order in our world. It gives us a past, present and future. Time also offers us a sense of perspective, so that we can make insights and connections, decide what is true and what is false, what is valuable and what is inconsequential. In this regard, the debate over the time and origin of the first tamed fire is an effective illustration of the ways in which time affects our perception of human kind and its relationship with the environment. Which theory of origin we ultimately choose to believe is particularly significant in that it gives insight into the way in which we view ourselves in relation to our past. Consider the importance of Curley’s Wife Essay

   She seems to believe that the man sent her a letter, and that her mother ripped it up, so she left home and, out of spite, married Curley. Even thought she never received the letter, she still clings on to the tiny bit of hope that one day she will be in the movies. Unfortunately, she dies before she has the chance to fulfill her dream, just as Lennie does. This represents and shows the reader how lives never go to plan. Their dreams are wishes for untarnished happiness and the freedom to fulfill their dreams is non-existant. As well as being important in the story, she also has some distinct unimportance. In the novel, she is never given her own name; she has the title of Curleys Wife and is looked upon as his property. It is as if she has no human rights. Whilst everyone else on the ranch has a name, including Crooks the stable buck, she is just defined as the wife of a man she hates. She tells Lennie that, â€Å"he ain’t a nice fella. † She doesn’t like being locked up in the house, and ends up having to sneak around so Curley doesn’t catch her. She also seems insignificant in comparison to the other characters, as she has no specific job on the ranch. She seems to have a lot of time on her hands, because she is heavily made up, and her hair seems to be perfect each time she appears. She fills her time in this way. She also wanders the ranch constantly claiming that she’s â€Å"looking for Curley. † This is because otherwise she is always in the house or hiding from Curley. For example, in Chapter One, when Lennie and George have first arrived, she is stood at the doorway asking for Curley, and after she has left, Curley arrives and asks if anyone has seen his wife. This proves that she is always hiding from Curley, and he is always keeping a watchful eye on her. When she dies, and is lying in the hay, Curleys intentions seem to be just to get revenge, nobody mourns her death. Only Slim has the decency to â€Å"touch her cheek,† and check her pulse under her â€Å"slightly twisted neck. † Curley jumps up and immediately says, â€Å"I know who done it. † His only thought is to kill Lennie. Ever since Lennie crushed Curleys hand he’s been planning revenge, and now he has the perfect reason. Nobody stops to mourn a young, unfortunate, nai ve girl’s death. Even though she has been at the ranch for only two weeks, she seems to already have gathered a reputation of a tart. George generally seems to regard all women as â€Å"jailbait† but knows that there’s â€Å"gonna be a mess ’bout her. † Of course, he is right. The other men on the ranch also think she’s a tart, and Whit thinks that Curleys wife has â€Å"got the eye goin’ all the time,† and Candy also says that â€Å"She got the eye. † Neither of these comments are factual, but they give you a bad impression of Curleys wife. When Curleys Wife first appears, her â€Å"hair is in curls†, she has â€Å"rouged lips†, and is wearing â€Å"red fluffy mules. † She is wearing a lot of red and this usually represents prostitution. When she has left after flaunting her body, George remarks, â€Å"Jesus! What a tramp! † Whit also says â€Å"she ain’t concealing nothing. † She could be more modest but she just wants male attention and the only way she can do this is by showing off her body. Although the main impression of Curleys Wife is that of a tart, there are many qualities that make you feel pity for her. She isn’t bright, and has an isolated life in her house, trying to hide from Curley. She says, â€Å"I don’ like Curley,† and clearly regrets marrying him. When describing her dream, she uses â€Å"I coulda,† and not â€Å"I will. † The girl has no hope and believes her life will be living on the ranch, doing nothing but hiding from Curley. She is also very nai ve, in the last Chapter, when Lennie kills her, she is led in the hay and is described as â€Å"pretty†, â€Å"sweet†, and â€Å"young†. All of these characteristics are those of an innocent girl, the young woman Curleys Wife really was. Curley only wants revenge for her death, Slim is the only person who checks her pulse, and even tells Curley to stay behind, but revenge is all Curley wants. Even Candy curses over her dead body, he says, â€Å"you god-damn tramp† and claims that she ruined his dream of owning the ranch with George and Lennie. Candy blames Curleys Wife, who was really just a lonely girl, and needed someone to talk too.
